I have some super big news. I've known for a week or so now, but needed to tell some people face to face. I have accepted a new job at Spotify in New York City. I'll be working as a developer in the Site Reliability squad. And yes... we are moving back to NYC. I'm extremely excited both to be working for Spotify and to be moving back to the city. Heather and I've been talking about moving back to NYC for a few years now. Even though we are not NYC natives, we consider it home. It was our first home together and it imprinted itself on our hearts.
When we moved from NYC to Nashville in the '90's, we realized in just a couple of weeks that we had made a mistake and we wanted to be back in NYC. However, the move wiped us out financially so we were stuck in Nashville. Don't get me wrong, Nashville is a great place, but we wanted to be back in NYC. We ended up staying in Nashville quite a while. It was a little bit of a dark time for us as it was a financial struggle and we went through a pretty major career change there. But... our Son was also born there, so lots of very good memories as well. But... it's still not NYC.
Fast forward twenty years... our kids are older. Brian is in college now. Rachel's in High School. I'm changing directions in my career (becoming a developer opposed to system admin). The desire to be back in NYC is greater than ever. Then, I start talking with Spotify. It starts to look like the perfect storm. I had a list of everything I wanted in my next job. Spotify nailed all of them. I fly up to NYC and meet everyone and I really enjoyed everyone. The office is great. I love the charity work they do. I love their culture. And... of course, it puts me back in the music business, even if it's only indirectly.
Now... I've got less that 6 weeks to sell two cars, rent my house, get rid of 90% of everything we own (no room for it in NYC), find a new apartment, and move.
Oh... and if you are a Spotify user... follow me on Spotify here!!!
